Sunrise – Lake Winnipesaukee

Shot near Meredith Center on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire.

This photograph taken on location on the set of National Geographic Channel’s ICE HOLES by Series Creator & Executive Producer Steve Marsel is of  the  “shanty town” where shooting was taking place.  It was taken on Saturday January 18th, 2014 near Meredith Center on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire.   This was taken during the filming of ICE HOLES Episode 102  “Now We’re Cookin”.  A light snow had fallen the night before and the light winds would pick the dry flakes up into the air and create halos around the sun.  In the distance you can see the film crew lined up like solders.  Being out on the ice like that early in the morning, especially after a fresh snow is really delightful, so pristine.  In this episode the guys find some time to relax on Lake Winnipesaukee during their break from competition.  Meredith New Hampshire is a great place to visit!  ICE HOLES airs Fridays on National Geographic Channel. Flash Freeze – The Morning After

Shot on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire.

This photograph taken on location on the set of National Geographic Channel’s ICE HOLES by Series Creator & Executive Producer Steve Marsel  Saturday, January 11th, 2014 on Lake Winnipesaukee in Meredith, New Hampshire.   This was taken during the filming of ICE HOLES Episode 101- “King of the Lake”. This was the morning after some unusually warm weather for January, and a day-long rainstorm that sometime looked like the mist in London.  The storm created a layer of slush on top of the frozen lake that made for miserable conditions for the cast and crew.  That night the temperature dropped to below 30F and the slush froze.  It created a beautiful visual effect, but was treacherous for walking and several members of the cast & crew fell.   In this episode the guys try their best to catch the big one.  ICE HOLES airs Fridays on National Geographic Channel. Shot on Lake Winnipesaukee, Meridith, New Hampshire.

This photograph taken on location on the set of National Geographic Channel’s ICE HOLES by Series Creator & Executive Producer Steve Marsel is of cast members Wade Bigelow & Alex Plummer. It was taken on Saturday January 18th, 2014 in Meredith, New hampshire on Lake Winnipesaukee.   This was taken during the filming of ICE HOLES Episode 101- “King of the lake”. This was the first annual “King of the Lake Derby” to take place in Meredith New hampshire.  All derbies start out small and build in size and stature over time.  Certainly with the national publicity that this first time derby has garnered by being on The National Geographic Channel through this new TV series “ICE HOLES”, this derby is off to a great start!  It’s a great opportunity to get off to a running start!  In this episode the guys try their best to catch the big one.  ICE HOLES airs Fridays on National Geographic Channel. Shot near Weirs Beach on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire.

This photograph taken on location on the set of National Geographic Channel’s ICE HOLES by Series Creator & Executive Producer Steve Marsel is of cast member Joshua Leiter was taken on Saturday March 1st, 2014 near Weirs Beach on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire.   This was taken during the filming of ICE HOLES Episode 107- “Going Big”. In this episode Wob and Todd dig a giant ice hole to get an edge over Donk and Josh, who are ahead by one fish.  Joshua is a very important character in the success of this series.  Being the antagonist, the series hardly works without his comic relief.  He’s really one of the most believable characters!  It was hard to imaging how his personality would fit in this mix, but he certainly makes his contribution the the show’s success!  Thanks to Joshua for being a part of the show!  CE HOLES airs Fridays on National Geographic Channel. Shot at The Birches in Rockwood Maine

This photograph taken on location on the set of National Geographic Channel’s ICE HOLES by Series Creator & Executive Producer Steve Marsel is of cast members Wade Bigelow & Bubbles was taken on Moosehead lake on Saturday, Friday, February 1st, 2014 at The Birches in Rockwood Maine.  Bubbles gets “cold feet” from walking on the ice and takes advantage of Wade’s close proximity to the ground to warm up his paws.  Having a dog as a character in a Reality TV series is a great idea.  Bubbles adds comic relief and a sense of man’s connection to animals in the great outdoors!  People really LOVE Bubbles!  This was taken during the filming of ICE HOLES Episode 103 – “Wade’s World”. In this episode Wade invites Alex, Wob, Todd and Josh up to his house on Moosehead Lake for some togue fishing, but it’s no quiet weekend in the country. ICE HOLES airs Fridays on National Geographic Channel. For more of Steve Marsel’s Photography, please visit Steve Marsel Studio

 The Magic Light

This photograph taken on location on the set of National Geographic Channel’s ICE HOLES by Series Creator & Executive Producer Steve Marsel  Sunday, January 19th, 2014 on Lake Winnipesaukee in Meredith New Hampshire.  This was taken during the filming of  Episode 102 – “Now We’re Cookin” I’m am a trained still photographer with over 30 years experience in the business.  There are three elements that make a successful photograph and I’m guessing they apply to video as well.  One of those three elements is the quality of light.  Still photographer are notorious for seeking out and shooting in the very best light.  That almost always implies the earliest light.  That light is  just after the sun rises, and the late day light, an hour or so before sunset.  This is commonly referred to as “The Magic Light”  This early morning shoot has some of the best light imaginable.  There is no amount of color correction or color grading in post-production that can equal the simple recording of low sweeping warm side-light against a dark sky.  Nothing! When I am in the presence of such light, I know that I don’t have to try very hard to make beautiful images.  The scenes are already amazing and I am simply recording them.  I have been in the business for more than 30 years.  I am still humbled by the awesome beauty that nature presents us with every day.  I’m honored to be there to record it!
